What We Are About

The OCM BOCES inclusive preschool program is designed to meet the individual needs of children with and without disabilities. We believe that children grow into tolerant and caring citizens when provided with a supportive learning environment that values diversity and cooperation. We also believe that the support of families, educators, neighborhoods, health care providers and the greater community contributes to this growth. Together, this program and community can bring children to their full potential.

The Program:

Recognizes the importance of developing social skills along with pre-academic skills.

Values each child's unique abilities.

Uses a play-based, child-centered approach.

Uses a developmentally appropriate curriculum.

Promotes partnership between parents and teachers.

Serving the Community

OCM BOCES preschool began as a self-contained preschool program for children with special needs in 1981. In 1989, the program began a process of inclusive options for preschoolers with disabilities in area nursery schools, day care centers and Head Start programs. These options still continue with our SEIT program (Special Education Itinerant Teacher) and our inclusive satellite program at Burton Street Elementary School in Cazenovia.

Experienced Qualified Staff

Teachers in all our classrooms are certified in special education, most with graduate degrees. The majority have more than 10 years experience in special education and early childhood development.

Multi-disciplinary teams consist of professionals in the areas of Education, Occupational Therapy, Physical Therapy, Speech Therapy, School Psychology, Health, Audiology and Vision.

Staff Development is ongoing through in-service training, workshops, conferences and continuing education.
