These are some of the significant dates in the history of the Cazenovia School District
About 1796 the first school in Cazenovia stood south of the west bridge, near the corner of Lake Avenue and Rippleton Road.
1798 structure was built on corner of Sullivan and Emory used for classes and churches and public meetings.
1805 Charter was signed for the Cazenovia District and a building of a school house at the east side of Sullivan Street, at $ 15.00 a share (payable one third in cash, one third in wheat and one third in Indian corn) made up the total cost for building the school $345.00 (lot was $45.00). There were 26 subscribers including William Whipple, Elisha Farnham, Lemuel Kinbsbury, Jabez Crocker, Manassah Prentice, Thomas Farr, Isaac Lyman, Ebenezer Johnson, J.N.M. Hurd, Ezekiel Carpenter, Calvin Stowel, Matthew Chandler, Jesse Roberts, Elijah Risley, Jannis Butin, Jonas Fay, Jedediah Turner, Jeremiah Whipple, S. Sidney Breese, Eli F. Hill, Horace Paddock, Samuel Ashard, Simon Remson, Eliakim Roberts, Sam Forman, Viber Crocker. The building may have been moved to the sout part of the lot when Seminary Street was put thorugh.
l 813 the town divided into 15 school districts and 2 more in 1814. Two of the districts were in the village, the dividing line between them being Mill & Lincklaen Streets. Another district was created later in the northeast part of the village.
1814 the school houses were erected and the common schools opened. School District #1 was housed in the lot on Sullivan Street, then moved north to the north corner of Sullivan and Seminary Streets.
1815 Ms. Grace Wilson opened a girls school on Sullivan Street opposite Seminary Street and continued it for about 20 years.
1825 Boys Seminary was opened (on Cazenovia College site).
1830 Mr. Daniel Burhans opened a Boys School in a building on Seminary Street west of the Baptist Church. Shortly thereafter a high school was started on the corner of Sullivan Street and the public square by Rev. Barrows, pastor of the Presbyterian Church.
1834 Miss Talcott opened a young ladies school in Ms. Wilson's old school and then in the old Madison County House on the south side of the public square.
1850 Ms. Savage had a girls school on Mill Street
Between 1852-1859 the original 1805 school closed. By 1864 it had been converted to a fire house until 1885.
1875 the three village districts were united into the Union School District and a new, second school, was erected at 9 Sullivan Street lot. The three districts were located as follows: 1) corner Fenner & Nelson Streets, 2) upper Farnham Street and 3) corner Sullivan and Seminary Street. The number of teachers in 1876 was 4, number of students 329 and the cost of a day's schooling was about seven cents. This building closed on January 10, 1931.
1887 new school building was erected on the Sullivan Street Lot.
In 1892 every child int the district except one between the ages of 8 and 14 attended the Union School. There were 246 students, 7 teachers and the cost of a day's schooling was eight and one half cents.
From 1899-1901 $15,000 was spent to rebuild the Union School.
1901 the Cazenovia Union School building was built.
1929 Formation of the Cazenovia Central School District by merging ten Districts.
1930 the District appropriated $300,000 to erect a new central school building.
1931 the new K-12 building opened (current Cazenovia High School building), there were 19 teachers and 415 students in that building, 63 at Cazenovia Seminary, 7 in District #1 - Bingley, 7 in District 2 Cook, 7 in District 6 (West Lake Road), 13 in District 7 (Rippleton), 13 in District 8 (Cobb Hill), 17 in District 9 (Ballina), 13 in Nelson District 1 (Village) 8 in Nelson District 4 (Case) and 26 in Fenner District 3, for a total of 569 students.
