If you want to use a direct quote in your paper, staple or clip
the note card on which it is written to the place where you want
to use it in your text. This will save time, and it will also
prevent errors that could occur in recopying the quotation.
When you decide to use direct quotes in your essay, it is most
important that you “weave” the information into the text. Place
the quotation directly within your own sentence so that a
person hearing the paper read aloud would not be able to tell
where a quote actually begins or ends.

7.

When you take information from a note card, stop writing
exactly where the passage ends and draw cut-off lines (/.../) on
the paper. You must do this whether you have quoted your
source directly orhave paraphrased it (stated the information
in your own words). While you still have the note card in your
hand, put the bibliography card identification letter and the
page number between the cut-offlines. Since this information
is the information necessary to make correct footnotes, it is
imperative that you make correct notations now. Put a check
in the upper right hand corner of each note card as you finish
with it so that you will not make a mistake and use the same
information later on in you essay.

8.

Continue this writing process as you develop each of the three
main points of your thesis (EGS). You may want to consider
each of the parts as a separate essay. Don’t try to finish the
whole rough draft in one sitting, however, do try to finish a
complete section at a time. This technique leads to better
writing because your thoughts will be consistent.

9.

Be sure to number the pages of your rough draft!!!
