Step 5: Taking Notes

A successful research project depends heavily on good note

cards. The order in which you take notes will not be the same order

in which you use them in writing your paper. It is important that

each card be clearly identified regarding source and page so that the

card may be used independently from the others. Youwill need to

give credit for each source used to write your paper, so this attention

to detail is vital.

HOW TO TAKE USABLENOTES:

1.

Write your notes on 3 x 5 or 4 x 6 index cards.

2.

Write on only one sideof the card.

3.

Copy the letter from the upper right corner of the

bibliography card for the source which you are using on to

the upper right corner of your note card. This letter will

identify the source from which theinformation came, and it

will save you from having to write the title of the source each

time that you begin a new note card. Then, be sure to write

the PAGE NUMBER from the source which you are using

on to the upper left-hand corner of the note card.
