Step 4: Temporary Thesis and Outline

Although you have not yet begun to take notes, you should

have some concept of the main ideas that you will be explaining

about your central idea. It is time now to get this temporary thesis

and outline written down. That way, you will know just what

information should be written down as you begin to take notes.

As you gather data, you may find that you want to change one

of your main ideas. This will be all right as long as your new main

idea strengthens or supports your central idea.
