The regional envirothon is sponsored by the New York Soil and Water Conservation Districts and is designed to test students' knowledge and understanding of natural resource issues within New York State and to cultivate within the students a desire to learn more about the natural world. With stimulated interest in environmental concerns, students will further develop thier skills and evolve into environmentally aware, action-oriented adults.
Envirothon activities begin locally with teams of five high school students competing for the county or regional envirothon title. Local competitions are sponsored by the county conservation districts. County winners then move on to the state contest where their knowledge is challenged in five areas: aquatics, forestry, soils, wildlife, and current environmental issues. Once a team is chosen as State Envirothon Champions, the members become New York State's representative at the National Envirothon Competition.
This year the Madison County Regional Envirothon was held on April 25th at Roger's Conservation Center in Sherburn, New York. Each school is allowed a maximum of two teams consisting of 5 members. Check out Cazenovia's two teams below.
