The Role of the School Counselor Every student at Cazenovia High School is assigned a School Counselor based on their grade level and last name. Those students transitioning into the 8th Grade are assigned Robert Oldfield. He will work with all students in grades 8 and 9. Upon the transition to 10th Grade, students with their last name beginning with A-K will be assigned to Cara Jacobson and those students with their last name beginning with L-Z will be assigned to Susan Tresco. Miss Jacobson and Mrs. Tresco will work with these students through the rest of their high school career. The Counseling Department's philosophy is one of collaboration to ease the transition from Middle School to High School, and Counselor to Counselor. We use a teamwork approach to ensure that every student's needs are being met. The role of a School Counselor may differ from district to district. At Cazenovia High School, the School Counselor works with students on
From time to time there are situations that require more in-depth and frequent counseling. Students and families may then be referred to Britt Zumpano, ADA-PEP counselor, or to outside agencies.
During the academic school year, the Counseling Office will be open from 7:45 a.m. to 3:45 p.m., Monday through Thursday, and 7:45 a.m. to 3:30 p.m. on Friday. Summer hours are 8:00 a.m. to 3:00 p.m., Monday through Friday. The office is closed 12:00 p.m. to 1:00 p.m. for lunch. *Please note that the Counselors work ten days during the summer. Please call to make an appointment, or leave a message with Mrs. Holic, the Counseling Office Secretary, as the Counselors check in periodically to retrieve messages. E-mail is also a great way to communicate with your student's counselor.
Counselors are available during regular school hours every day and at other times upon request. Please make an appointment in order to meet either before or after regular school hours. We can be reached at 655-5301. Students can make appointments with their respective counselor through Mrs. Holic, the Counseling Office Secretary. Mrs. Holic will issue the student a pass for their scheduled time. Counselors often initiate an appointment with a student by sending a pass through homeroom. Please remember that you are expected to keep your appointment unless you notify us in advance. In the event of an emergency, in which the student needs to see a counselor immediately, please be sure to make this clear with Mrs. Holic. If your counselor is not available, one of the other counselors will assist you.
Parent/Teacher/Student Conferences Communication between parents, teachers, and students is essential. We encourage parents to speak directly to a teacher(s) either on the phone or through e-mail before requesting a conference. However, if a conference with the student's teacher(s) is deemed necessary by the Counselor, the Parent, or a Teacher, a conference will be arranged. Meeting times are generally held before school (7:30 a.m.) in the Counseling Office conference room. Parents wanting to meet individually with only one teacher may certainly do so without the counselor being present. These conferences can be arranged directly with the teacher. |
