John Barron is just fourteen years old, and his
summer assignment is to spend his time caring for 6,000
sheep, high in the mountains atop the hay meadow by
himself.... accompanied by just two horses and four dogs.
He’s scared, but his undemonstrative father says no one
else is available on the ranch - it’s up to John. As John
remarks, “things just happen to sheep,” and indeed, they
do. Bad things, like river floods, coyote attacks, and a host
of other calamities. Read The Haymeadow, and witness
John’s will to survive as he protects his sheep.

The US Department of Education has recently
distributed a very helpful booklet: Growing Up Drug
Free - A Parent’s Guide to Prevention.
This 46 page booklet also contains an up-to date
section in which many of the commonly abused
substances are detailed. As the types and names of street
chemicals change with frightening regularity, it is important
to have access to current information.
Best of all... the booklet is FREE! Just call 1-877-
4EDPUBS and ask for it by the specific title. Or you can
order it by mail: Growing Up Drug-Free @ Pueblo, CO
81009.

Throughout the year, books from the Reading
Learning Center have been loaned to students for the
purpose of encouraging daily reading and reading for
pleasure. Would you please check your homes and your
children’s bedrooms for books labeled with BUCK or
PSEN when you are “cleaning and sorting” this spring. If
you find any, even from previous years, please return them
to the Reading Center.
