The work of Georgia O’Keefe,
especially her beautiful flower
paintings, was explored by the fourth
grade students. They noticed how she
used tints and shades of colors and
how she blended colors together to
make a smooth surface on the
canvas. Students compared O’Keefe’s
work to Vincent van Gough’s and
found that both used bright colors.
O’Keefe’s paintings appear smooth
and van Gough’s are filed with thick,
vivid brush strokes. Using chalk and
blending colors to make tints and
shades, the fourth grade classes
made their own flower pictures in the
style of Georgia O’Keefe.
The third grade classes started
their first clay project. They combined
many shapes and textures, using slab
and hand building methods, to make
clay owls. The owls are bas relief
sculptures that can be hung on the
wall for the best presentation.
Second grade learned that there
are many printing methods that artists
use to create art. After looking at
many examples, the students then
created very colorful pictures. By
combining a variety of carefully printed
shapes (circle, square, oval,
rectangle, diamond and triangle) to
make each element of their design,
the concept of using shapes to make
art was reinforced.
The multi age classes have
been studying the Iroquois. In art, we
made Iroquois gustoweahs, hats, to
go along with their unit of study. Each
tribe of the Iroquois nation wore a
different feather arrangement on their
gustoweah. By looking at someone’s
gustoweah, you could tell which tribe
they were from. Students used Native
American symbols to decorate their
gustoweahs.
The first graders were very
excited to begin their first clay project.
Using their hands they molded clay by
pinching and pushing to make small
clay bowls called pinch pots. The pots
are being fired in the kiln and the next
step is for the students to glaze the
pots. After glazing, the pots return to
the kiln for a final firing before being
complete.

Our kindergarten classes had a
very festive December. While we were
all excited about Christmas, we also
learned about other holidays, such as
Hannukah and Kwanzaa. We read The
Star Tree by Gisela Cole and
decorated our hallway with a star tree
for each class. Some classes
constructed gingerbread houses with
their 4th grade reading buddies, and
some classes made yummy Christmas
trees with sugar cones and candies. Of
course, the boys and girls were
delighted to work on their surprise
Christmas gifts for their families. We all
enjoyed getting ready for the new
millennium by counting out 2000 M&M
candies. Can you guess what
happened to the extras?
Many thanks to the families who
donated snowman projects for the
retirement house. They are both
creative and adorable! Happy New
Year to everyone!
