SCHOOL INFORMATION

are learned while listening to and watching
others read. Simple concepts about print
such as where the story begins, the front
and back of the book, reading from left to
right, top to bottom and what to do at the end
of the page are all pre-reading skills that
children learn when they learn how to “read.”
While there are many things that
parents do to support and prepare their
children for school, reading aloud to them is
one of the easiest and most effective ways
to do so. We know that children do not
develop reading skills at the same time,
however, all children can benefit from read
alouds. Parents benefit as well by spending
valuable quiet time reading a good book with
their children.
Have a great year,

Parents are asked to please put their children’s names on all articles of clothing
that the children bring to school.
Please be sure to write a note and tell your children when you will be picking them up
and that you will meet them in the Art Room. We realize that schedules change during
the day, but please try to avoid calling the school before dismissal time.
Visitors and guests are always welcome at Burton Street School. For a number of
reasons, it is important that all visitors sign in at the main office. This, of course,
includes parents. In order to properly serve all parents and students, it is necessary
that all visitors report to the office and sign in. Many parents visit us each day and we
need to know who is in the building and what classroom they are visiting. There will be
signs on all the entrances asking visitors and guests to report to the main office. This
policy is necessary to protect our students and their own particular situations.
It is important that we have a record of where our students are during the day.
Whenever a student is picked up to leave the building with an adult, either at dismissal
or for an appointment during the day, it is essential that the school know who the adult
is if it is not a parent. It is the parent’s responsibility to inform the school if someone
other than a parent is picking your child up. If we are not informed, we may be reluctant
to release your child to that person. Please stop in the office and sign out before you
leave the building.
If you are picking up your child at dismissal time, please wait for him or her in the
Art Room. The last few minutes of the day are very important ones to the teachers who
are trying to review the day or who are trying to make sure children have all they need to
go home. For some children this is their only guarantee that they will go home with what
they need (notes, homework, papers, bulletins,etc.).
Students should not be dropped off at Burton Street before 7:45 a.m. Students
who walk to school should not arrive before 7:45 a.m. In the past some students have
arrived shortly after 7:00 and there is no one here to supervise them at this time. We
appreciate your support on this.
If parents are driving their children to school and walking them in, they should
park in the rear parking lot. If parents are just dropping their children off, they can do so
in front of the rear entrance.
