Changes in the ride home for all
students must come through the
Burton Street Office. Send a note in
with the child in the morning or call the
Burton Street Office (655-1325). This
is for any change, whether a child is
getting off at a different stop or being
picked up. If your child is not doing the
usual scheduled routine, the office
must be notified. Parents are not
allowed to park in the bus circle at
dismissal time. If an emergency occurs
and you need to have your child called
off the bus, the office will notify the
bus driver. Thank you for your
cooperation.

Dear Parents,
Reading and writing was never so fun
as it has been since the official opening of
our in-school Wee Deliver Post Office on
Monday, September 25th. In the first five
days of operation, 683 letters were written,
addressed, stamped, processed in the post
office, delivered and read! How did we
accomplish such an amazing feat? Easily,
with the help of 60 student employees and
several parent volunteers.
With a School to Careers Grant written
by first grade teachers, Mrs. Scammell and
Mrs. Conway, we received the money to
purchase supplies and materials for our very
own post office. Each teacher received a
binder of materials that includes job
applications, a post master test, templates
for making envelopes, curriculum ideas, and
stamp suggestions. Students in every grade
level apply for the jobs that will change every
ten weeks.
Since the post master’s job is the job
carrying the most responsibility in the post
office, only fourth graders are allowed to
apply. They take a postal exam that tests
their knowledge of how a letter should be
addressed, how a post office is run and how
to work with others. The post masters must
know how to do every job in the post office in
the event that an employee is absent.
First graders have an important job as
well. As facers, they are in charge of “facing”
all of the letters in the same direction and
handing them to the canceler. The second
grade cancelers “cancel” all stamped letters.
Letters mailed without a stamp are “returned
to sender.” After the stamps have been
canceled, the canceler hands the letters to
the third grade nixie clerks who check for
proper address form. Some of our nixie
clerks are pickier than others and an
abbreviation of boulevard without a period
can be stamped “returned to sender” in a
flick of a wrist. Others are more lenient and
will even attach a stamp to a letter that is
missing one.
Of course the most obvious post office
employees are our third grade mail carriers.
They work with the public and through rain or
shine, study hall or instruction, their work

Now that the school year is underway,
we are looking ahead to a busy time in the
health room. We will be starting vision and
hearing screening on all students at Burton
Street. If you would be interested in
volunteering in the health room, (doing
some clerical work and answering the
phone), please contact me at 655-1355.
Any help would be greatly appreciated.
A note will be coming home in the near
future, (if it has not already), concerning
the Dental Fluoride Program offered to our
students through New York State Public
Health. The program is offered to
kindergartners through fourth graders in our
district. The kindergarten children take a
daily fluoride tablet which is chewed and
swallowed each day. The first through
fourth graders take a once a week rinse
which is swished in the mouth and then
disposed of. If your child currently takes a
fluoride vitamin or tablet, that’s great. If
your child is not on a fluoride treatment at
the current time, you may want to consider
the fluoride program, as our local water
supplies are not fluoridated.
