Changes in the ride home for all
students must come through the
Burton Street Office. Send a note in
with the child in the morning or call the
Burton Street Office (655-1325). This
is for any change, whether a child is
getting off at a different stop or being
picked up. If your child is not doing the
usual scheduled routine, the office
must be notified. Parents are not
allowed to park in the bus circle at
dismissal time. If an emergency occurs
and you need to have your child called
off the bus, the office will notify the
bus driver. Thank you for your
cooperation.

Dear Parents,
Reading and writing was never so fun
as it has been since the official opening of
our in-school Wee Deliver Post Office on
Monday, September 25th. In the first five
days of operation, 683 letters were written,
addressed, stamped, processed in the post
office, delivered and read! How did we
accomplish such an amazing feat? Easily,
with the help of 60 student employees and
several parent volunteers.
With a School to Careers Grant written
by first grade teachers, Mrs. Scammell and
Mrs. Conway, we received the money to
purchase supplies and materials for our very
own post office. Each teacher received a
binder of materials that includes job
applications, a post master test, templates
for making envelopes, curriculum ideas, and
stamp suggestions. Students in every grade
level apply for the jobs that will change every
ten weeks.
Since the post master’s job is the job
carrying the most responsibility in the post
office, only fourth graders are allowed to
apply. They take a postal exam that tests
their knowledge of how a letter should be
addressed, how a post office is run and how
to work with others. The post masters must
know how to do every job in the post office in
the event that an employee is absent.
First graders have an important job as
well. As facers, they are in charge of “facing”
all of the letters in the same direction and
handing them to the canceler. The second
grade cancelers “cancel” all stamped letters.
Letters mailed without a stamp are “returned
to sender.” After the stamps have been
canceled, the canceler hands the letters to
the third grade nixie clerks who check for
proper address form. Some of our nixie
clerks are pickier than others and an
abbreviation of boulevard without a period
can be stamped “returned to sender” in a
flick of a wrist. Others are more lenient and
will even attach a stamp to a letter that is
missing one.
Of course the most obvious post office
employees are our third grade mail carriers.
Theywork with the public and through rain or
shine, study hall or instruction, their work
(continued on page 2)

Nowthat the school year is underway,
we are looking ahead to a busy time in the
health room. We will be starting vision and
hearing screening on all students at Burton
Street. If you would be interested in
volunteering in the health room, (doing
some clerical work and answering the
phone), please contact me at 655-1355.
Any help would be greatly appreciated.
A note will be coming home in the near
future, (if it has not already), concerning
the Dental Fluoride Program offered to our
students through New York State Public
Health. The program is offered to
kindergartners through fourth graders in our
district. The kindergarten children take a
daily fluoride tablet which is chewed and
swallowed each day. The first through
fourth graders take a once a week rinse
which is swished in the mouth and then
disposed of. If your child currently takes a
fluoride vitamin or tablet, that’s great. If
your child is not on a fluoride treatment at
the current time, you may want to consider
the fluoride program, as our local water
supplies are not fluoridated.

holiday gift purchases. Look for the Troll Book Fair flyer in the children’s
backpacks the second week of October. Profits from the Book Fair go toward
enrichment activities for the children, such as author visits. This year author/
illustrator Tedd Arnold’s (No Jumping on the Bed and others) visit to Burton

For anyone who has ever been excluded--at any age--this book speaks to
all of us. Picture a large corrugated box--about the size that would hold a large TV.
Add one very unfriendly dweller--George--and you have the makings of a very
interesting story. George becomes the victim of his own unfriendliness when he
leaves his play “home” temporarily. Read This is Our Houseand see what
George learns....and, oh, yes.... remember to SHARE this story with a friend.

ADAPEP
This year marked the 30th year
that ADAPEP (Alcohol and Drug Abuse
Prevention & Education Program) has
been a part of the Cazenovia School
District. This program provides drug
education to students as part of the
regular school calendar. The ADAPEP
staff is also available for individual and
small group counseling and small group
activities.
Based at the OCM BOCES,
ADAPEP places counselors/educators
in thirty six schools throughout the area.
George DeHaas (655-1325 x 328) is the
ADAPEP counselor at Burton Street
School and is certified in both school
counseling and Health Education. Mr.

DeHaas is at the School on Mondays,
Wednesdays, and Fridays and during
lunch periods on other days. Parents
and teachers can make referrals to the
program for crisis intervention,
individual attention, or small group
social skill development.
With the average age of first use
tobacco and alcohol dropping into the
10 - 11 year old range, it is never too
early to reinforce a no-use message in
the early grades. ADAPEP classroom
presentations and auxiliary activities
seek to do that.
Look for ADAPEP news and
drug education resources in the
Burton Street Newsletter throughout
the year.

Fun With Maps

Mrs. Slocum’s third grade class
was hard at work last week learning the
continents of the world at the direction
of student teacher Miss St. Onge. The
students made edible maps of the
continents using an edible peanut
butter dough for the base and candies
to define areas of importance.
Chocolate chips turned into mountain
ranges, coconut into snow and icy
areas. A gumdrop marked an
important city. Licorice string outlined
the whole map. It was a great way to
learn about the world, especially when
everyone got to eat their work!

If it should be necessary to close school earlier than the usual
dismissal time (for example because of the weather conditions), we
would like to know that your child knows what to do. This is
particularly important if both parents are at work and there is no one
to look after your child in the event of an early dismissal.
PLEASE DISCUSS THIS WITH YOUR CHILD and if you wish to have
him/her do something other than what he/she usually does at the end
of a normal school day
, please make certain that your child
understands the arrangements and complete the slip below and
return it to the school office.
All after school activities are canceled when school is dismissed
early.
Notifications of early dismissal will be broadcast over local radio
stations.
