Decision Making News

Burton Street “Good Sports”

At the November 14 Burton Street
Planning Team meeting, committee
members reviewed and revised a draft of a
school brochure, which will highlight
important programs and facts about our
elementary school. The brochure will be a
significant addition to our efforts to improve
communication between our school and
the community.
The ELAted learners tutoring program
for at-risk fourth graders is currently
underway. The program received grants
from the Central New York Community
Foundation, Inc. and the Burton Street
PTA. The Burton Street Planning Team
extends its thanks to these organizations
on behalf of the entire school community.
At its December meeting the team will
identify goals and objectives for the 2001-
2002 school year. The building team
meetings are held the second Tuesday of
each month at 7:15 pm in the elementary
conference room.

From the Library........

IMAGE BS_News_December_200006.gif

The tallies are in for the Library Book
Fair, and a sincere thank you goes out
to everyone who supported the Library
Book Fair! Once again , we earned
enough money to sponsor a visiting
author/illustrator. This spring, author/
illustrator Tedd Arnold (No Jumping on
the Bed,Green Wilma,
etc.) will be
visiting Burton Street. We anxiously
anticipate his visit, and thank you for
making it possible. Thanks, too, to the
many parent volunteers who worked at
the Book Fair., with a special thanks to
Joann Stevens for coordinating the
volunteers.
During the months of November and
December, with the many holidays
being celebrated, we turn our attention
to those less fortunate, and think of how
we might help. Traditionally, Burton
Street Library makes a donation from
the profits from the Book Fair to an
organization recognized for its
humanitarian efforts. This year, we will
be donating money to UNICEF on
behalf of the Burton Street community.
Sharing cultural diversity is a goal of
the library media program, and during
December we will be sharing books
about Hanukkah, Christmas and
Kwanzaa. Have a wonderful holiday
season, and enjoy the gift of sharing a
book with your child.

Dr. Brady Presents
Paper

It’s so hard to believe that the
holiday season is approaching. Third
and fourth graders are hard at work
with rounds, instruments, folk
dances, part singing and learning
music medals for acquiring many
skills. First, second and multi age
students are learning to accompany
songs on the xylophones and
unpitched percussion instru-ments.
Everyone is clapping and patting
rhythms and moving to the beat. On
December 22 at 9 am we will all
participate in a Holiday Sing Along
assembly featuring songs for winter,
Hanukkah and Christmas.

Dr. Don Brady, the school
psychologist at Burton Street School
recently presented a paper at the New
York State Association of School
Psychologists convention held in
Buffalo, New York. The presentation
was entitled: A Preliminary
Investigation of National Football
League Players’ Knowledge of
Concussions. Dr. Brady also
appeared as an invited guest on a
weekly radio talk show on WMCR (106
FM) and discussed the NFL
concussion related research.

Hospital Land

The first grade and first year
multi-age classes have traveled to
Crouse Community Hospital’s
“Hospital Land.” The children learned
about typical hospital procedures and
each one had a turn to be a hospital
patient. This educational trip relieves
those first time jitters when visiting the
hospital.

No Jumping on the Bed,

a fiction picture book by Tedd Arnold

Book Talk:

Is there anyone who has resisted the desire to take a few jumps on their bed, even though there may be a family rule
to the contrary? Certainly not Walter, in the entertaining book No Jumping on the Bed. The seemingly harmless act
of jumping on the bed becomes an act of folly and destruction as Walter proceeds to fall through many ceilings and floors
on his way to the bottom floor of his apartment building. He meets many interesting neighbors along the way. Read No
Jumping on the Bed
and find out about Walter’s escapades..... just don’t read it while jumping on the bed!
