Burton Street School
Reminders
Parents are asked to put their
children's names on all articles of clothing that
the children bring to school.
Please be sure to write a note
and tell your children when you will be picking
them up and that you will meet them in the art
room. We realize that schedules change during the
day but please try to avoid calling the school
before dismissal time.
Visitors and guests are always
welcome in the school. For a number of reasons it
is important that all visitors, including parents,
register in the main office. Many parents visit the
school each day it is important that the office
know who is in the building and what room they are
visiting. It is also important that we know where
students are during the day. Whenever a student is
picked up to leave during the day, either at
dismissal or for an appointment during the day, it
is essential that the school know who the adult is
if it is not the parent. It is the parent's
responsibility to inform the school if someone
other than the parent is picking up their child. If
the school is not informed the child may not be
released.
If you are picking up your child
at dismissal time please wait in the art room. The
last few minutes of the day are very important ones
for teachers who are trying to review the day and
make sure the children have all they need to go
home for the day.
Students should not be dropped
off at Burton Street before 7:45 a.m. Students who
walk to school should not arrive before 7:45 a.m.
When students arrive before that time they may be
no one to supervise them.
If parents are driving their
children to school and walking them in they should
park in the rear lot. If parents are just dropping
their child off they may do so in front of the rear
entrance.
Club Hosting Dinner
Dance
Cazenovia High School's
International Club will be hosting a dinner dance
to help fund a trip to Italy on October 21 at
Hubbard Hall on the campus of Cazenovia College
from 6-10 p.m. A silent auction will be held in
conjunction with the dinner dance. Cocktails and
silent bidding on auction items will take place
from 6-7 pm with a buffet dinner following at 7 pm.
Dancing will ensue immediately following dinner.
The auction tables will close at 9 pm.
In order to ensure a successful
and fun evening, the International Club is
currently seeking monetary donations as well as
items for the auction baskets. Plans are calling
for thematic baskets filled with related items,
both comically and practical. For example, a "golf
basket" may include a putter, golf balls, a beach
towel with a golf motif, a book of golf jokes etc.
The following themes have been suggested: golf, a
day at the beach, Italian flair, Bakers etc.,
Gardening, Cazenovia's Best, movie time, desert
Time, and a kiddie collection.
We would appreciate any token of
help you may be able to offer. Gift certificates,
items for the auction baskets, or suggestions to
help make this fundraiser a success will be greatly
appreciated. Please call Ms. Vickers at the high
school at 655-1300, ext. 5216. Tickets may be
purchased in advance for $20 per person at the high
school. Tickets at the door will be $25 per
person

Wrestling Program in
Jeopardy
The Cazenovia interscholastic
wrestling program is in jeopardy of disappearing
unless a significant number of boys decide to
wrestle the upcoming season.
Wrestling, along with all the
other varsity and junior varsity sports offered at
Cazenovia High School will begin practice on
Wednesday, November 8. For the past several years
the number of boys who have gone out for the
wrestling team has dwindled. At this point in time,
unless the program demonstrates a high level of
interest from boys in grades nine through 12 who
will commit to the program for the entire season,
the sport will be discontinued.
The sport of wrestling has
changed significantly over the years as new rules
and precautions have been established ensuring the
health and safety of all wrestlers. Perhaps the
most notable change has been the use of body fat
percentage as the determination of each wrestlers
appropriate weight class. Under the current program
each boy's weight class is determined after the
compilation of body fat percentages from various
points of the body. This procedure is completely
objective and prevents wrestlers from losing weight
in order to drop into as low a weight class as
possible.
Coaches are also encouraged to
discuss proper nutrition with their wrestlers
making sure that they stay healthy during the
entire season.
The coach for this year's team
is Mark Blair. Mr. Blair, who is in his fourth year
as the varsity wrestling coach at Cazenovia,
wrestled for Cazenovia High School himself and is
hoping the sport will continue to be viable at
Cazenovia. If you would like more information about
wrestling you may contact Greg Carroll, athletic
director, at 655-1358.
Hockey Team Selling ESPN
Magazine Subscriptions
The Cazenovia High School
varsity ice hockey team is selling subscriptions to
ESPN Magazine in effort to raise funds for the
upcoming season.
The team is looking forward to
the upcoming season under new head coach Tim Suppe
who joins the Laker staff after several successful
seasons at Clinton High School. In addition, the
team is looking forward to having a new home at the
Iceplex on the campus of SUN Y Morrisville which
has added a second sheet of ice complete with a
locker room designated for the Cazenovia team.
Among the team's scheduled appearances this season
will be a Christmas Tournament at Immaculate Heart
Central School in Watertown, and a northern trip to
Lake Placid in January where they will play Saranac
Lake and the junior varsity team from the National
Sports Academy.
You can show your support for
the team by purchasing a two year subscription to
ESPN Magazine for $40. For each subscription sold,
$30 goes toward the benefit of the Cazenovia hockey
team and the subscriptions make terrific gifts. To
purchase a subscription, please complete the form
below and enclose a check for $40 made payable to
the Cazenovia Sports Boosters. For more information
contact Greg Carroll, Athletic Director, at
655-1358.
