Transportation Safety Tips

School buses will begin operating on Wednesday, September 6, 2000, the first day of school.

Transportation Supervisor John Durfee said the buses will be running a few minutes early the first few days of school so drivers can check their driving times. As a result, students should plan to be at their stops at least five minutes early.

After not seeing school buses on the roads for the last two months it is easy to forget the laws and safety precautions regarding school buses. Drivers are reminded that they must stop in both directions on divided highways and especially in the bus circles.

Mr. Durfee said school bus safety is a year around job noting that a lot can be accomplished at home when parents take the time to talk to their children about school bus safety.

Perhaps the most important rule to keep in mind is the "ten Foot rule". Students should walk down the road 10 feet before crossing in front of the school bus - not directly in front of it. The bus driver's view of the students who have been left off is much improved by following that rule.

Equally important is student behavior on the school bus. Mr. Durfee said parents should emphasize the importance of students staying in their seats while on the bus. It is important that drivers not be needlessly distracted while driving. Students should also be reminded to keep their hands and feet inside the bus at all times and to not litter on the bus.

To help your child retain his or her personal belongings and school items a backpack is very helpful. Please put your child''s name on all belongings. The buses are on many different routes during the day and drivers do not look for items after each one. Please call as soon as possible when an item is lost.

Requests for changes in the drop-off points and pick-up points must be put in writing to the school your child attends. If there is any question the student will be dropped off at his/her normal location.

It is also helpful if your child wears a name tag for the first few weeks of school.

The transportation Department will be offering instruction on proper crossing procedures during the first few weeks of school. The Transportation Department requests that parents do not come to the drop-off area with their child. It can district the child from looking to the driver for the safe crossing signal and could result in an accident or injury. Please keep all siblings and pets away from the drop off and pick up areas as well. This will help ensure the safety of all and keep the driver's job on the job at hand.

Dropping off and picking up children at the Burton Street Elementary School should be done at the rear entrance to the building. At the Middle school the West Parking Lot should be used. The bus circle entrance at both schools should be avoided. The buses need the space to make the turn into the circle.

Riding the bus to see a friend, spend the night, or attend a party is not permitted.

Having a safe accident free year takes the cooperation of everyone; parents, students, and especially the motoring public. Let's work together to make that happen in Cazenovia.
