Notice is hereby given to residents of
the Cazenovia School District that the schools regularly
collect information on students and maintain this material
in student records. Pursuant to the Federal Family
Educational Rights and Privacy Act of 1974 parents of
district children and students over 18 years of age have a
right to inspect and review any and all official records,
files, and data directly related to their children or
themselves including all material that is incorporated into
each folder intended for school use or to be available to
parties outside the school system; and specifically
including but not necessarily limited to identifying data,
academic work completed, level of achievement, attendance
data, scores on standardized tests, health data, family
background information, teacher or counselor ratings and
observations, and verified reports of serious or recurring
behavior patterns. Requests to review official records must
be in writing to the building principal or superintendent of
schools.
In addition, parents of a student under
18 have the right to request a correction of any information
contained in the student record that they believe to be in
error, misleading, or otherwise inappropriate. Such a
request shall be filed in writing with the principal of the
school having the record with a copy sent to the
superintendent. In the event such a request is denied the
interested parties have the right to appeal to the
superintendent for a hearing. Parents, guardians, or
eligible students may:
1. file a complaint with the U.S.
Department of Education alleging failure of the district to
comply with FERPA and its regulations; and
2. obtain copies of this policy and the
locations where copies may be obtained.
Student records other than directory and
public relations information and any material contained
therein which is personally identifiable, are confidential
and may not be released or made available to persons other
than parents or students without written consent of such
parents or students. There are exceptions to this rule such
as other school employees and officials, and certain State
and Federal Officials who have a legitimate educational need
for access to such records in the course of their
employment. Directory and public relations information means
name, address, date and participation in activities
recognized as official student organizations and other
similar information already a matter of public knowledge in
the school community. This directory information is
entirely exempt from the provisions of the Privacy Act and
may be made public without written consent of parent or
student. This includes publication in the "Blue &
Gold" or the District Web Site. However, students 18 and
over or the parents of students of any age can request that
the school not make directory information available. Those
requests will be honored. Please send a letter to Mr. Robert
S. Dubik, Superintendent at Cazenovia Central School, 31
Emory Avenue, Cazenovia, NY 13035.
